Sydney Harbour Bridge Suicide Attempts, 1932-1934

The Sydney Harbour Bridge opened to pedestrians and traffic on 19 March 1932. Within weeks it had become the scene of a series of suicide attempts that shocked Sydney and attracted widespread newspaper coverage throughout Australia. During the first two years after the bridge opened, dozens of people climbed or jumped from the footways, prompting growing public concern about the absence of protective barriers.

This database brings together contemporary newspaper reports of every known suicide attempt from the opening of the bridge until the installation of protective barriers along the waterside of the footways in 1934. The records include both fatal and non-fatal incidents and identify the individuals involved wherever their names could be established from contemporary sources. In many cases, newspapers were unable to identify the person at the time of publication, and those entries are recorded as "Unidentified", "Anonymous", "Unknown" or "Not named" in order to preserve the historical record.

Each record summarises the available evidence from contemporary newspapers, including the date of the incident, the person's identity where known, the reported circumstances, witness accounts, coronial findings and references to the original newspaper sources. The collection also documents the increasing public pressure that ultimately led the New South Wales Government to install protective barriers on the bridge in 1934, primarily to discourage further suicide attempts.
